-
-2008 - BEST READ
-
My best read for the last year (2008) must be
-
"The Bodyguard’s Story"
-
Diana, the Crash, and the Sole Survivor
-
Trevor Rees-Jones with Moira Johnston

I found this book enthralling and a real “can’t put downer”.
It is full of intrigue, with background and inside stories which are really stirring and sensational.
-
Do I think there is any credence to a conspiracy theory - No! .. No! .. No!

INEFFECTUAL COMMUNICATION
-
For those of you who have been following my Blogs both here and at BURTON JOYCE ONLINE you will be aware that for the last 4 to 5 months I have been “blogging” on about numerous subjects which have influence on our community and individual lives. .Over the next months I am reasonably sure that I will be blogging and visiting them again. However, my current subject is fresh and stimulated by my thoughts on the possible future use of “The GROVE.”.
-
Whilst considering the subject, I did recall that a couple of months ago one of our Parish Councillors was delegated with investigating the matter and seeking possible funding. At that time, it was decided that the opinion and suggestions of the community would be sought for consideration.. Some time later I believe the PC provisionally concluded that the GROVE area should be developed and used for the relaxation and reflections of the B J residents ( I am not too sure of the precise wording, however it is something along these lines) .

I would like to learn HOW and WHAT influenced and persuaded the PC to proceed in this particular direction.. .. .. . Now don’t get me wrong - I do not necessarily disagree with PC decision , however, I do question the mechanism used to arrive at this decision. I personally do not recall - EVER - being consulted by the PC or any individual Councillor on subjects or decision taken by the PC..- where is the “Open” administration promised at election time. I am also particularly interested in the huge negative effect the “Poplars Playing Field “ has on the PC budget.
-
The PC minutes promised a review of the subject - uumh !!!!.
-
Once again let me say that I admire and respect tremendously all those giving their time for the administration and betterment of their community. However, I do question the apparent, ineffectual mechanisms, they use to provide and present the OPEN administration promised
-.
Let me say that .. NO! I have never got up off my backside and attended a PC meeting, nor have I telephoned a Councillor to express my views.
-
However, YES ! I have e mailed Councillors, incl. one of our Councillors at County Hall and YES, he has answered my mail on several occasions AND as a result has spoken with me on several occasions. - Thanks Councillor O’Riordan.
-
Councillors and representative should realise the majority of our community hesitates to contact verbally, for like myself they hesitate and dislike confrontation. Confrontation, particularly with officialdom usually involves some inevitable intimidation, for the majority of officialdom have the experience and expertise to intimidate us, the less informed - More frequently than not they usually avoid direct and relevant responses even to the most simplest of direct questions - ( ie Parliament Question Time and TV interviews) very frequently and all too often with an unjustified arrogance.

Communication via e-mail is much more acceptable and convenient.
-
Unfortunately our Parish Councillors, do not have, or choose not to publicise, an e-mail address.. .. Surely even if they want to ensure privacy for their personal e-mail address, they can quite easily offer direct/personal e-mail contact via a Parish Council list of official yet individual Councillor e-mail addresses

A New Year

-
BURTON JOYCE ONLINE
Chronicling everyday life in the Nottinghamshire village
News views, faces, places, - serious, amusing, sometime contentious
.

-
-
“Happy New Year” to everyone, everywhere
-
Some chance many of you will retort ! Especially with the World’s Economic Crisis overshadowing most everyone and everything.

OK ! The coming times will be difficult. So now, even more so , is the time for us all to pull together as a community and look after our own .
-
Here is my suggestion, hope and endeavour for 2009. -

As you will begin to realise “My glass is always half full - never, never half empty “.
-
I would therefore be “Chuffed” to see a genuine, cohesive, caring, all embracing community here in our village . A community that is more aware of the plight of others less fortunate than themselves, an awareness with true empathy of all groups and minorities throughout the total age spectrum of B J
-
We will all have our individual and pet endeavours mine is the improvement of the social lives of the “Silver Heads” amongst us. So much talent and knowledge is “tied up” and lying semi-dormant in this sector of our community, I want to free and release much of this for the benefit and interest of others
-

What a load of “twaddle” I can hear in the background ..

OK! that’s fine with me, you are entitled to your own views, however, mine are somewhat different and more positive ( my glass is already half full ).

I believe that creating a central -

“ONE STOP SPOT “ a daily meeting place for all to gossip ,
spend some quality time, read daily papers,
take the “weight of ones feet”
receive advise and suggestions relative to grants/benefits etc,
receive help with form “filling-in”
Have a warm tea, coffee or cold drink,
Yes! possibly learn to use the Internet,
hear and discuss daily events , news etc
-
Will help to develop a cohesion in our community.

I believe all of this can be achieved, relatively easily, relatively quickly and economically,
with the broader use of the CARNARVON ROOMS . .. ..
-
Whooo ! Hold on! .. .. Many of you will certainly think and say.
-
Why ?- will be my standard reply?
-
It is already used for other village affairs and Yes! occasionally for Hot Snacks (the proceeds going to a worth while cause )
Why can we not expand and broaden this facility - is it that there is not a need or is it simply that too many amongst us have “a glass half empty”

Communication

-
Communication! Communication! Communication !
-
Ont Saturday ( the 21st) we went down into the village centre for the annual Carol Service “sing-along”
-
There was approximate 100 individuals there , quite disappointing for a village of 4000.
-
I wondered why the attendance was so low, for it could be expected that over 50% of the number attending, would probably be the congregations of the 3 churches.
-I respectfully suggest, that the answer may not be the indifference of the community to their participation in village activities and affairs.
-
No! My opinion is - the high probability of the "absence of an awareness" in the staging of event and activities within our village
-
This opinion is re-enforced by a limited census, I personally completed, over the last week, where I asked several questions of a "cross section" of B J individuals in the village centre
-
"Can you name a B J Parish Councillor?" -
"Do you know what is happening to the B J Post Office?".-
"Have you ever used or visited B J's Poplars Sports Field?"
"Did you attend at B J's Cenotaph this years Remembrance Day.? "
"Do you use or attend any of B J's Village Clubs, Groups, Societies or Halls?"
-
The replies were both astounding, quite depressing, yet not altogether unexpected -
-
They confirmed and reinforced an opinion I have held for several months now.
-
Our Village Fathers, Administrators, Group and Society Officers should all quickly and dramically improve, implement the ongoing communication with our community developing an interest within ALL age groups of our community with their agendas, objectives and progress .
-
The Organisations and their officers should begin to adopt an aggressive/proactive, effective and "OPEN" communication programme ( broader and more frequent than is preswently existing ).
A communication programme which includes the information, useful and ALL embracing, to ALL Groups and Interests within our village community..
-
A TALL ORDER ?
-
Not so ! There is an immediate, zero cost, effective solution available to all ..
existing and constantly available

JOIN IN

-
-
-WHY YOU SHOULD "JOIN IN" - Burton Joyce Online
-
There is little doubt in my mind that generally the community spirit and interactivity of years gone by is no longer around.
-
Many of you may agree and point to the development of technology, mobile phones, the internet, easy travel etc. as well as individuals and families appearing to live more introvert lifestyles. Others will disagree strongly, I would be pleased to learn the arguments in support of your views.
-
However, what I consider is most important and is that we improve the distribution of community information and the individual awareness/participation in our village life, striving to embrace, restore and maintain an all inclusive society -

-
Word of mouth , notice boards and printed publications all have a place in distributing information and should always be present within our community, however they do not, and cannot fully contribute the wider needs of a truly open society in today’s fast moving world.
-

In today’s society, the Internet is probably more widely used and read than any other single news/information source, certainly for the younger generation, who have grown up and been educated with the medium, are now well familiar and expertised with the use of computers, e mail, the www and mobile phones.
-
**The generation not fully and I stress not FULLY or at EASE ,with these newer communication techniques are, sections of the Mature and Silver Heads who are understandably hesitant with and when applying themselves to learning the use of these new technologies **
-

For all those who ARE comfortable with the new technologies, there now is the need to fill the space ONLINE with genuine local news, announcements and current affairs - which is the precise purpose of BURTON JOYCE ONLINE and the renewed reasoning behind developing the awareness of the project.
-

This project has been geminating for some 2 years now, with purposeful regular postings and really getting into its stride this last August . It has now progressed to a point where regular daily reports are the “norm” with - news, views, faces and places - serious, amusing, sometime contentious. B J Online is now looking to broaden its appeal by encompassing reports (postings) with interests for all age groups and generations, together with the facility for readers to add their personal comments, opinions and suggestions,,. and features guest articles, competitions, even examples of responsible Street Art (displays on legitimate surfaces) and minority group interests .To create develop the genuine all embracing relationship with the total cross section of the local community
-

The project has already established itself as the genuine/original B J Online source - for local news, announcements and interests. It is independent, non-commercial, and free of colour, class and creed bias,
-
So to Local Administrators and Interest Group Secretaries - "JOIN IN" and contact with your stories, events and results etc and contribute to the B J Online community
-To all Parents - get your children to "JOIN IN"
-To Teenagers - get yourselves, friends, parents, grandparents "JOIN IN" involved
-To everyone - spread the word, have your say, and "JOIN IN"

www.burtonjoyce.blogspot.com
******************************
.“Burton Joyce Online” is a community website created for the 3 villages - BJ , Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph, its aim is to chronicle the daily news, views, faces, places - serious, amusing and sometimes contentious. “Burton Joyce Online” is a non-profit, non-commercial, non political project, free of any discrimination of colour, class or creed content
It is intended also as a community forum for discussion, suggestions and opinions, with an interactive facility for chronicling all personal opinion - with guest contributions/articles always welcome,
In addition to the ongoing chronicles ( including numerous illustrative photos and images) of the every day life in the 3 villages, there are occasional trips into the past with interesting historical facts and stories relevant to the area.
The Online project is the work of the “Burton Joyce Diarist” - a B J villager of 39 years standing, with connections to Stockingers, Farmers and Blacksmith ancestors in the village dating back to the early 1600, with possible earlier genealogy connections to Sheriffs, Mayors and Chamberlains of Nottingham.

-For all those who Want to.. Need to.. Like to.. Chat to and discuss with others within our 3 villages - on any topic - serious, amusing or contentious,
-
Come on all of you join your ONLINE community, for if you are reading this "blog" you have already begun the process, so continue and “Click n Chat !” with others within this “Burton Joyce Online” website
-
Please spread the word to everyone who may be interested in chatting and gossiping ( local subjects, history, incidents etc) and improving the lifestyle of our community, particularly that of the "mature and silver heads" amongst us. There is also the ongoing opportunity for submitting regular guest articles-It is a fact that quite frequently, as we all get older, we find we become less mobile and lack the personal " get-up and go" to socialise with others of our generation. We loose contact and become more isolated and withdraw within ourselves. A regular "Click n Chat !" on this website will begin to change this frame of mind and help with making new friends and socialising again.
-
“Burton Joyce Blog” can in fact “kick start" a new and enjoyable interest in your life, more so for those who are house bound and less mobile. Of course a computer and internet service is vital to “Click n Chat !“, however, for those who are mobile there is always the free access to computers and the internet (together with instruction) at the B J Library in Meadow Lane.
So “Click n Chat !” and participate in your community via this your local website or the community site at

PRESS RELEASE

Burton Joyce Village TimeLine Blog & Diary

-
-
B J BLOG PRESS RELEASE

As part of my publicity campaign and in an effort to gain greater public awareness I decided to circulate a Press Release publicising the fact tha B J now had an ONLINE community debating, discussion, suggestion, opinion forum ( This Burton Joyce Blog ) .-

I sent out Press Releases to each tier of local government from the Parish Council upwards, to the top level of our local MP in Parliament and sat back waiting for acknowledgements of receipts-

Why you may ask such extreme action? - Well in my mind, and that of many many others, I am of the opinon that there can be all to many instances of the use of the frustrating and general excuse of lack/absence of awareness of the existance of a condition, situation, incident, knowledge of bad practice etc - These excuses which relieve many of a responsibilty and accountabilty ( the "Need to Know" practice is so frequently offerred in reponse to critism in interviews - as argumental denial of their awareness)

To-date I am pleased to note that I have received these reponses to the Releases.. .. from "Vern" our MP in Parliament and "James" our C C Councillor - Thanks to you both ( even though "Vern's" was from his assistant - it is still appreciated) plus .. J @ bjra

This Burton Joyce Blog is aimed at bringing to the attention of all those with interests in our village, the daily news, views, faces and places - serious, amusing and sometime contentious . It constantly seeks constructive comments, replies, discussion and suggestions via the online interactive comments facility

It is also intended as a chronicle of to-day's daily life within the village, hopefully ensuring access to the information by future generations, for it will be part of B J's history by tomorrow

Burton Joyce Village TimeLine Blog & Diary
News, Views, Faces and Places - serious, amusing, contentious

-
Courtesy and good manners
-
Here is an observation of mine, which is definitely becoming more frequent of late. .. ..
-
Why is it that individuals in the employ of governmental or local authority establishments, local interest groups etc., fail to reply or acknowledge incoming e mails, particularly when they contain offers of help and/or subjects of local community interests
-
Is it complacency, indifference, ignorance (of the fact that the sender has its receipt noted), or simply that it is deemed unnecessary, or of insufficient importance to warrant attention, consideration or a reply ?
-
It has been muted that projects with entreprenarial substance ( even the non-commercial) may be considered as "un-touchable" .. .. or in my opinion even "threatening"
-
So what is the answer? .. .. a lack of simple courtesy or a total absence of goodmanners ! ! !

WHAT A MESS !

Who has the responsibility for this

I have reported on this mess before today. So here goes again.. ..

-
When will those responsible for the upkeep of this patch take the “bull by the horns” and get this unsightly mess in the centre of the village tidied up and “in keeping” with the preferred appearance of our village -

Shame on you who have responsibility for this “oversight“. Shame on those who have accountability for ensuring and maintaining a tidy and attractive village .Once again is this the attitude which contributes to why we did not win an Attractive Village Award this year?-

Why must we accept that this particular area in our village centre be allowed to remain in this untidy, overgrown, eye sore condition for such an extended period ?.

Why should this situation be allowed to exist? Particularly as the BCTV is located in the Village Old School alongside.

PERHAPS IT NEEDS SOMEONE WITH INITIATIVE ? Oh dear me! Initiative appears to be in short supply of late .. .. ..

I will continue reporting on progress, until this situation is resolved .. .. ..

Improving Community involvement
-
Here is a question and an obvious suggestion for the PARISH COUNCIL.
-
Why does the PC continue to ignore the creation of an ONLINE contact facility for the village community?
-
A simply e mail address enabling contact with the many village residents is already ONLINE, and is certainly better for direct communication (admin@burtonjoyceparishcouncil.org.uk)
-
Better still now, how about adding a Parish Council website ?
-
If this suggestion appears to be " a step too far ". I will gladly offer regular space ( free/unedited/unabbreviated) within this BURTON JOYCE BLOG to aid your public announcements and information distribution

INDESCRIMINATE PARKING !
-
My Index Subject Heading of POP ( Parking On Pavements) is almost true in this instance ( One wheel on pavement)
-
How long will this type of vehicle be allowed access thro the village Main Street and be allowed to indiscriminate park in such an obstructive and restrictive manner when there is an off-road facility within the Co-op car park for off-loading, not 2 M away and with complete and clear access into the Stores designated off loading area
-
This commercial delivery vehicle parked in the narrow Chestnut Grove, obstructing village incoming traffic completely, restricting safe views for those entering and leaving the Coop car park from the Chestnut Grove entrance/exit. and creating further obstructions into the Vicarage, BCTV and two private dwellings, plus the free passage of traffic leaving the village by this narrow road.
-
This inconsiderate parking has to be stopped not only for the above reasons but also because of the difficulties it creates for pedestrian parents and their children , for the elderly and infirmed , and for the general safety of all the village residents

A SPECIAL LADY

WOW! I received an email today, just minutes after I uploaded my previous blog and it makes my day !.

I would like other readers to see her comments - Not because they are congratulatory, but because this lady is typical of the particular "cross-section" of our community to whom I am hoping my daily Blogs reach, so here goes.. ..

" Just a few words about your blog - it was lovely to drop on it by chance and I felt is was unfair not to congratulate you on your work. .. .. .. .. I shall be 80 years young in February, and enjoy my weekly Google Alerts about the village - now I've got the Blog too ! Thanks . One thing though, your prefix "wetwo" intrigues me, anything to do with.. .. .. .. .. Well I tried! Thanks again" .. .. .. ..

Norma! It's my pleasure - Its me that needs to thank you ..

-
"HAVE YOUR SAY" - You mature B J residents !

A few relevant estimated figures for Burton Joyce Bulcote and Stoke Bardolph ( albeit for year 2004)
-
Population - 3555 with 41% classed as mature and 32% being over 60 years old
-
Life expectancy - Female 83.2 years/ Male 82.2 years
-
Number of Pensioner households - 289
-
This Burton Joyce Blog is designed to attract and interest the mature Internet Surfers (Silver Surfers) resident in our village, and to stimulate the contribution of their views and opinions relevant to their own community.
-
A Blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a web site usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Many Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical Blog combines text, images, and links to other Blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic.
-
The ability for readers to submit and reply to comments via the “online interactive facility” is an important and interesting feature of this BJ Blog.
-
So once again all you BJ residents get involved, online, with the news, views, faces and places connected with your own community

ARMISTICE Day

-
Burton Joyce Village TimeLine Blog & Diary
"News, Views, Faces and Places - serious, amusing, contentious" -
-
.By comparing these two images and those in the previous Blog, the difference in attendance at B J Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day is obvious
-
..........................................Why is there a "National Remembrance Sunday" and a few days later an "Armistice Day".. ??
-
" Remembrance Sunday" is when we as a country openly display our remembrance of all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.. ..
-
"Armistice Day" is the anniversary of the ceasation of the conflict in the 1914/1918 war..
ie - The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. When we also remember those who never returned from the conflict
-
To my mind, an open display of respect on Remembrance Sunday covers the respect of ALL those who have fallen in conflict today, yesterday and everyday
-
This is the reason why I felt a little dispair with the "later/younger generations" attending the B J Cenotaph on Sunday at 11 o'clock. ------- Particularly as the "later/younger generations" will be by their own years more closely linked to the country's latest fatalities

REMEMBERING?

Those gathered at the Cenotaph just before the 11th hour and the lone physical sign of remembering
-
REMEMBERING
-
The B J villagers and UK citizens everywhere annually recall and REMEMBER on the 11th day of the 11th month those who fell and died in our Nations’s conflicts.
-
These visual signs of respect and thanks by the Nation are always physically shown and seen on -
-
Remembrance Sunday every year at hundreds of Cenotaphs sited in villages, towns and cities
-
WE WILL REMEMBER ! .. ,..
-
Will We?, Do We? .. .. Evidently not necessarily so..
-
For only 10 of the 4000 or so Burton Joyce residents were at the Cenotaph this year - to remember, pay their respects and show their gratitude for those who made the ultimate sacrifice
-
WHY ? Why? Why? On this “Sunday of National Remembrance”
-
Why -No official village representative at the cenotaph at the 11th hour?
Why -No British Legion representation?
Why -No Clergy representative from any of the 3 village churches?
Why - No single sign of Remembrance - public or private place at the cenotaph
-
"Only one simple small poignant cross brought and laid there by one of the ladies present"
-
-
Are these the reasons why I feel so low and dissappointed on this
"ANNUAL NATIONAL REMEMBRANCE DAY" ?

St Helen's original church spire is dated as from the 1300’s Unfortunately it now permanently located at ground level within the churchyard with a Grade 2 listing

The top of the spire was replaced in 1895, gas lighting was installed, then replaced with electricity in 1935. Central heating was installed with a boiler under the central aisle, to be replaced by a gas boiler outside the building about 1940.

The Vicarage in 1922 was described as suitable to the needs of the vicar

TRICKS or TREAT

TRICKS or TREAT ?
-
Vernon Croaker MP - Maiden speech in Parliament - 10 Jun 1997 : Column 1033(Hanzard)

…“There are also two beautiful rural villages. Burton Joyce is the larger. It is popular with commuters to Nottingham and has a most beautiful 13th-century church. Stoke Bardolph is in the valley of the Trent, with lovely views across the river to Shelford and Radcliffe” .. .. I see this every day - a treat!
-
I went to my B J Dentist the other day - for my routine check-up. As usual my teeth did require some attention - A filling had broken in one and a “hole” had appeared in another , …. ….so I accepted my Dentist's diagnosis and booked in for a later appointment - for remedial treatment - for a problem - I could not see.. !! ?? a trick!
-
On my way out I stopped to read a grand coloured brochure pinned on the reception notice board - It advertised the forthcoming Bonfire and Fireworks event scheduled for the 1st Nov. - I read it and re-read it . .., several times, until eventually the receptionist came over and asked “Is there a problem?”. “Yes I replied - the Dentist’s examination must have affected my eye sight .. I can‘t see where this Village Bon Fire event is being held” - “Oh! Don’t get concerned, she replied, we have all had the same problem. Obviously, there is a mistake and it has been left off - We guess it will be at held at the Poplars Sports Ground” - .. .. a problem - for I could not see where - a trick!
-
We received our Quarterly Gas Heating Bill (July/August/September ) the other day - approx £450 - for a summer quarter - for a couple - this was definitely NO treat
-
Yes approx £450 Gas Heating Bill - for a couple - for a summer quarter -
-
To Gordon Brown ! Please take note
-
.. .. And to that guy named FAWKES, .. .. .. "Where are you? "
-
-
"You have some unfinished business" .. .. :-) .. .. this COULD be a treat!

DID YOU SEE ?
-
Last nights BBC TV programme on “East Midlands Today” ( reporting on the subject of “Car Seat Belt wearing” .
-
The piece was filmed on the Burton Joyce/Lowdham Road , on the B J side of the Bulcote Cross Roads at a point between the “old, existing and filthy” 30MPH restricted speed sign and the “new clean interactive speed registering warning” sign sited at the Shaftsbury Avenue cross road with the new (apparently un-saleable) apartment block alongside
-
The reported result of wearing a car seat belt is the saving of at least one fatality every day of the year
-
The Old Bulcote Petrol Station (now only selling cars) was clearly recognisable with its plethora of vehicles on display alongside the road
-
